Lecture: Agricultural Hiring Fairs of Yorkshire
Thursday 5th August at 7.30pm
We are very pleased to welcome Dr Stephen Caunce for this lecture.
Now largely forgotten, Hiring Fairs were traditionally held every year in many towns across the north. Linking employers with farm servants seeking jobs, they were also popular social events. Malton was the venue for one of the biggest fairs, serving both the East and North Ridings. This lecture uses original research and the reminiscences of those who used them to recall ‘the highlight of the rural year’.
Dr Caunce retired from his post as a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Central Lancashire in 2014. His PhD investigated the lives of farm horsemen in Yorkshire and was published as “Amongst Farm Horses: The Horselads of East Yorkshire”. His research since has explored several other key aspects of the transformation of the north of England between 1600 and 1939, emphasising the experience of ordinary people.
