How To Play Terni Lapilli

Did you know Romans loved a good old game of tic-tac-toe? Well it wasn’t actually called that – it was known back then as Terni Lapilli (three pebbles). This game was played by soldiers during their campaigns to hone their strategic skills. It was really portable. They could draw a grid on cloth and use pebbles wherever they were – preferably not in the middle of a battlefield…

Supplies

  • 3 counters of the same colour each.
  • Print out or sketch the board game below

Players: 2

Goal: get 3 counters in a row across the middle of the board.

Rules: Take turns to place one counter on the board on one of the red circles. After filling the board, take turns moving 1 counter 1 space along one of the lines.

You can

Move around the circles or into the middle and out again on the next turn.

You can’t 

Jump over or on the top of one of your opponent’s pieces.
