Coming up...
20th November – Jane Grenville, OBE, FSA is a British archaeologist and academic, specialising in the archaeology of medieval buildings.
Her lecture examines contrasting viewpoints on the conservation of historic buildings in different parts of the world, looking at the clearly different approaches to buildings conservation between Europe and North East Asia.
15th January – Graham Smith, founder member of the Friends of York Walls has, along with two friends, taken over 1700 photographs of the city walls of York.
His talk explains how these images will provide a useful and lasting resource, not only for the Friends of York Walls, but for local organisations including the City of York Council and anyone interested in York’s archaeology and history.
19th February – Dr Ron Pickering, volunteer at NYMR and local historian. This talk will explain the origins of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, from the early days of horse-drawn carriages, the takeover and development by George Hudson to the expansion to Malton (and then even to London). When and how did the service decline, and who was responsible for the Heritage line we now know?
Ron will illustrate his talk using rarely-seen archival material from the current NYMR headquarters at Pickering.
Annual General Meeting
We also have a Friends Annual General Meeting and social evening, usually held in May, which always provides a good opportunity to socialise.
Open to all, new members especially welcome.
The Friends AGM takes place in the New Classrooms in the West Wing of Malton School.
