We’re raising £60,000 to kickstart building a new museum at the heart of the community – can you help?
A new home for Malton Museum is a step closer to becoming a reality, with your help. Malton Museum has been invited to apply for National Lottery Heritage Funds to fund the development of a new museum in the heart of Malton.
We’re inviting local residents, businesses and visitors to contribute to our match funding. This will cover detailed surveys, designs and cost estimates, allowing us to create a museum that serves our community.

Support for the new museum
‘Malton Museum is 90 years old this year and is dedicated to celebrating the very special history of Malton, Norton, and the surrounding area. It holds a nationally significant collection of other 27,000 artefacts dating from pre-history to the present day. Malton was the home of an important Roman Fort located at Orchard Field and the civilian settlement was located in Norton.
We want to help celebrate the special history of both towns and add to Malton’s growing reputation as a visitor destination as well as helping to support local businesses located in both towns through increased visitor footfall and spending.’ – Phil Crabtree, Chair of the Museum Trustees.
‘The proposed relocation of the Museum and its collections to the Market Place in Malton would be of significant mutual benefit to the Museum, local businesses, and the wider community.
The enhanced visibility and accessibility of the new site would naturally increase visitor numbers, boosting footfall in the town centre.’ – Liz Kemp, owner of Kemp’s General Store.
Proposals for the new Museum are supported by North Yorkshire Council, York University Archaeology Department, Fitzwilliam Malton Estate, Malton and Norton Town Councils and Cllr Lindsay Burr. The Museum is aiming to submit the funding application in November
