Malton was the venue for one of the biggest fairs and most years it was said, as the Yorkshire Herald did in 1910, that ‘the usual pleasure fair was held in the Market place, and the roundabouts, electric motor cars and other attractions did a good trade’. In 1931 the Hull Daily Mail said, ‘there was a big attendance of farm servants at Malton Martinmas hiring yesterday.
Strong waggoners were asking from £40 to £45, and foremen and shepherds £45 to £50. Strong lads with some experience were offered from £20 to £30 per anum.
