‘Dear Reader,
Organising Malton Regency Country Ball this and last year was the realisation of a 50 year-old-dream. Ever since I as a teenager read my first Georgette Heyer (These Old Shades) and Jane Austen (Emma) Regency-era books, I have spent many hours imagining what it would be like to be in that world. Further life-long exploration of Georgian times has fed my excitement about hosting these events.
When my imaginings of a relaxed Regency Country Ball came to life last year it was lit and decorated by over 100 candelabras. Under the guidance of Lottie, our dance instructor, and with the music of Ebor String Quartet, we danced the night away. This year our aim is to be more sumptuous and frivolous than last. We are polishing up our dance shoes, sewing our new dresses (or jackets) and ordering our gloves all ready for a proper party on 9 October.
To add to the evening’s excitement a raffle will be drawn. Lots of local businesses have kindly donated prizes. These include afternoon tea for two from the Old Lodge, and two tickets for a Town Tour put on by the Malton Museum. However, one of the main prizes is a First Edition Regency novel by Georgette Heyer (Frederica), kindly signed by Sir Stephen Fry. (She is his favourite author). If you are unable to attend and still want in on the raffle, these tickets can also be purchased in advance.
Because we had such fun last year, we did not want it to stop! That is why this year we have added a convivial Regency Soiree in York House on Saturday 10 October. The Lord and Lady of the manor invite those that would like to share with them supper provided by the Talbot and Regency entertainments, such as card games, horse racing, parlour games, riddles, and perhaps a small quadrille. All to the music of Ebor Quartet, in the sumptuous surroundings of a Queen Anne/George I petite hunting lodge.
