I’m Nick I am a volunteer at Malton Museum.
How did I get into this?
I have done many varied jobs in my life and found I had some time on my hands and wanted to help out my local community. In late 2016 I saw an appeal in Gazette & Herald by the museum for volunteers. I have always had an interest in local history and love visiting museums. I was particularly interested in media and photography. I join the volunteer team and began by helping out with the Oral History project in 2017.
Whilst this was a learning curve I thoroughly enjoyed this and was proud to help create an archive for future generations. I then decided to try my hand at Front of House duties. I did a lot better with this than I expected and enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and some from all over the world!
My main passion is photography and this opportunity with the museum has enabled me to progress in this area. It is wonderful to see your photos in books and publicity literature.
This year I have taken photos for Malton Museum’s ‘The Story of Racing’ book which has become acclaimed. I have also assisted in more oral history recordings as part of the museum’s ‘Horse Power’ exhibition.
During my time at the museum, I have done many varied tasks and have found it very enjoyable and rewarding. The staff and volunteers are all very friendly and supportive. I have gained confidence and been able to follow my various media interests.
I feel that the museum is definitely growing and I that I am helping a great and valuable community asset.
