In 2020 Ged Dodd contacted Malton museum to express an interest in examining the group of Russian bale seals that formed a part of the Halliday collection. These seals had previously been published in John Sullivan’s 2012 book “Russian Cloth Seals in Britain: A Guide to Identification, Usage and Anglo-Russian Trade in the 18th and 19th centuries”, but Mr Dodd felt that knowledge of the seals had moved on since then and that the Malton seals would benefit from a re-assessment.
The museum provided Mr Dodd with images of the seals from its collection and gave permission for the images to be incorporated into Mr Dodd’s Peace Havens Web site.
Sadly, Mr Dodd died in 2022 and the Peace Havens Web site is no longer available, but in order that Mr Dodd’s work should not be lost we offer here an extract of the page from that site concerning the Malton bale seals.
