Museum History
The Museum's core collection of Roman archaeology comprises the artefacts excavated by Dr.John Kirk and Philip Corder during 1927-30. These are on loan from the Kirk Settlement.
Excavations by Raymond Hayes and Sir Edward Whitley in Norton during 1948-49 resulted in material, including items from an extensive Romano-British kiln site, being donated to the Museum.
Further excavations directed by Derek Smith (later Rev.) in 1949-52 resulted in the acquisition of a significant quantity of wall plaster from which, later, the Malton Goddess was reconstructed. The Four Seasons mosaic was also discovered during these excavations.
The last extensive excavation was carried out by Peter Wenham and Terry Manby in 1968-70 and many of the items found are on display in the Museum.
Publications relating to these excavations are available in the Museum.
The Museum is also building up a collection of Social History items from the area.
